Why have irrigation standards?

Standards are a fundamental part of maintaining good quality equipment. There are a series of International standards that cover many types of irrigation equipment from pipes and fittings to valves, sprinklers and emitters. Each standard describes the range of tests that each product must pass and it also provides a way of comparing equipment of the same type.

For example the valve standard describes a test for measuring head loss in the valve. If valves have been tested according to the standard a buyer could then compare the performance of the products and choose one with the lowest head loss.

What does this mean for irrigators?

All manufacturers of quality irrigation equipment either test their products themselves to the standards or have the products tested by independent laboratories. The Australian Irrigation Technology Centre (refer here to the testing page) does this kind of testing in Australia. As an irrigator ask what tests have been done of equipment you are thinking of buying.

To find out more about standards visit the Standards Australia or International Standards Organisation websites. You can also download the specialist edition of the Irrigation Code of Practice which contains a list of all the standards that were current at the time the document was published.
